When most people in Statesville hear the phrase “impaired driving,” most probably first think of a drunk person operating a vehicle. It’s not a new phenomenon. It’s been a problem for decades. When coupled with drugs, fatigue and cellphone use, the roads that we all travel along become even more dangerous. Although laws exist prohibiting motorists from driving while impaired, many take to the road hoping that they won’t get caught.

If you’ve ever wondered what tips off a police officer that a motorist may be intoxicated, certain ways in which they operate their vehicle can definitely raise red flags.

Probably one of the more common behaviors that will get police officers to take notice is a driver who weaves, swerves or drifts within their lane or in and out of traffic. Motorists who drive on the centerline or in the middle of several lanes may also raise their suspicions. Those who tailgate or nearly crash into others do as well.

Motorists that tend to erratically slam on the breaks or accelerate may also be cause for alarm. So too may any driver who makes an abrupt or abnormally wide turn.

Individuals who are impaired by alcohol often have a lack of awareness and delayed motor skills. It’s common for them to forget to turn on their headlights when they get behind the wheel. They often drive slower than the posted limit and have delayed responses to traffic signals. They also tend to sit upright close to the car’s front windshield in hopes that it will make it easier for them to see.

Drunk driving can be deadly both to yourself and others. This is one of the reasons that those charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI) face such stiff penalties in North Carolina once they’re caught. When you’re facing serious charges, you should have a DWI/DUI attorney advise you of your rights in your case.
