A 23-year-old Statesville resident was arrested and charged with multiple crimes after leading police on a high-speed chase through Iredell and into Rowan County on July 16.
Calls from concerned residents first started flooding into police dispatch earlier in the day on July 16. The callers all reported having seen a suspicious vehicle along Elwood Road here in Statesville.
When officers with the Iredell County Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team arrived at the scene, they located the suspicious vehicle that callers had phoned in about. Upon closer inspection, the officers determined that the license plate that was affixed to the vehicle didn’t belong to it, but instead another car.
The officers attempted to initiate a stop of that vehicle but were unsuccessful in doing so. Its driver sped away when they tried to do so.
They tried to follow him for a while but had to eventually back off as the motorist’s driving became increasingly erratic. Officers decided to put down stop sticks after he nearly crashed into a patrol car. Soon thereafter his tires were blown out and they were able to take him into custody.
By the time he was booked into jail, he had been charged with drug possession, driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI) and two assault with deadly weapons charges, among others. It’s unclear when the next hearing in his case is scheduled for.
